India's Best Moments In Cricket

When it comes to watching cricket,  one cannot predict the game completely. This uncertainty in prediction showcases some of the magical and best moments in cricketing. India has risen up as a cricketing giant these days. Youth packed team, good run chasing ability, powerful batting line up are some of the few amazing traits to mention about the Indian Cricket team. In this article, I am sharing some of the best moments in Indian cricketing growth.(in no particular order)

1) The 1983 World Cup

India was considered as underdog when it started off for the 1983 world cup at England. No one has ever expected that India will fly back home with the World Cup trophy in hand. India gave a easy target of 183 run in a 60-over match batting first at the Lords. But it was more shocking to see that the mighty West Indies team was all out for just 140. This was India's maiden world cup victory and one of the proud moments.

2) Sehwag's 309 and 319 runs in a test inning

Before Sehwag smashed 309 runs, there were no any Indian batsman to reach the 300+ runs runs in a test match. The interesting part associated with this is that Sehwag scored this massive triple century against their cricket arch rival Pakistan at their home ground. (Multan, 2004). This was one of the most celebrated innings played by Sehwag. Later in 2008, Sehwag scored 319 against South Africa in Chennai. Till date, Sehwag is the only Indian to have scored triple centuries.

3) Anil Kumble's 600th test wicket

On January 17th, 2008, Anil Kumble became the only Indian bowler and third in the world to reach the 600th test wickets landmark. Playing the test against the Aussies in Perth, Kumble reached this mile stone. His 600th test victim was Andrew Symonds. Kumble bags a total of 619 test wickets in his cricketing career. This was one of the greatest moment for the Indians he is the only Indian to reach that record.

Kumble's full statistics here

4) The ICC T20 World Cup, 2007

What could be more great moment for India than winning the first edition of the T20 World Cup. India were once again a world champion since 1983 when it won the World Cup. India beat their arch rival Pakistan and bagged the final over win in one of the thrilling finals ever played. Whole India and Indian fans across the globe celebrated this moment with great enthusiasm.

5) Yuvraj Singh's six 6s in an over and a fastest fifty

The first T20 world cup was even more exciting and great for India as the world cricket witnessed a rare but amazingly exciting moment. Yuvraj Singh hit six 6s in an over, being the first Indian and second after Herschelle Gibbs in the world to have achieved this record in international cricket. This match was more exciting as Yuvraj bagged the record of fastest fifty sparing only 12 balls (he still holds this record). Yuvraj smashed every deliveries of Stuart Board in achieving this record.

6) Exclusive Indian double centuries in ODI

This one of those great moments that India boasts off exclusively till date. There are only three double centuries being hit in ODI cricket and all the centuries are in the name of Indian batsman Sachin Tendulkar, Virendar Sehwag and Rohit Sharma. Sachin being first scored 200* against South Africa, followed by Virendar Sehwag who scored 219 against West Indies and Rohit Sharma who scored 209 against Austrailia.
Rohit hit 16 sixes while scoring the double century and that stands as a record till date for the maximum number of sixes in ODI.

7) 2011 World Cup

India won the World Cup for the second time since 1983 but this time defeating the neighboring cricketing giant Sri Lanka. In this match once again captain Dhoni played the match finisher innings. India bagged the world cup title for the first time in their home ground. This victory was very hugely celebrated in India.

8) ICC Champions Trophy 2013

This is another celebrated great moments of Indian Cricket. India became the champions once again after they beat England by just 5 runs in their home ground. Despite being given a easily chase able target of 130 runs, England failed getting it and were defeated by a nominal margin of 5 runs.

9) India's 418/5 vs West Indies , 2011

This is another great moment that every Indian cricket fan remembers. In this match against West Indies, India scored highest total in its cricketing history. This is the match when Sehwag smashed 219 runs off 149 deliveries. Always refreshing to see the massive shots in this match from the Indian side especially coming off from Sehwag's bat.

This sums up the India's best moments in cricket. I might have skipped some moments. Please feel free to comment, I will incorporate those moments in later updates.

Funny Dismissals in Cricket (videos)

Dismissals in cricket carries the two emotions at the same time. Dismissal may be painful  for the batting team while it holds the bursts of happiness for the bowling team. Today I am presenting some of the dismissals that seem very funny from the viewpoint of spectators. Lets get started fellas.

1) Inzamam-ul-Haq dismissal
In this test match between Pakistan and England, Inzamam attempts a sweep shot but he loses his balance and stumbles upon the wicket. He tries his best to avoid touching the stumps but he could not succeed and eventually the bails drop.

2) Kevin Pietersen dismissal
Pietersen was dismissed in this weird momentum, but his dismissal was kind of funny to watch as a spectator. He misses hitting the bouncer of Dwayne Bravo and the ball hits his helmet. Whether to say it was the power of the ball or the loose knot of helmet strap, the helmet gets pulled of  his head and directly hits the stumps. One of the weirdest and funniest dismissal one can ever encounter in cricket.

3) Shahid Afridi dismissal
In this match between Bangladesh and Pakistan, Shahid Afridi gets dismissed in funny manner. Afridi drives the ball straight, the ball still being in the air seemed to be carried to bowler Shakib-ul-Hasan. Hasan attempts the low catch but could not get hold of the ball and the ball escapes into the air, AGAIN attempts getting the ball but still could not make it, and the ball again escapes into the air but far this time towards Misbah-ul-Haq. The ball gets deflected from Misbah's body and now Hasan grips the ball comfortably leaving one of the funny dismissal in cricketing history.

4) Kumar Sangakkara's dismissal
This is another piece of fun that came in Compaq Cup between India and Sri Lanka. One of the funniest hit wicket till date I think. It was RP Singh who was bowling a full toss, Sangakkara stroked it casually but in the meanwhile the bat slipped of his hand and landed over the stumps. If you look at the gesture of Sangakkara, he seemed completely amused. Meanwhile, RP Singh tried to stop the ball and dived into the field. He was still unaware that Sangakkara was out and all his fellow teammates pounded over him. Check the video to find out more.

5) Peter Kirsten's dismissal
This dismissal has the weird factor dominant in contrast to the funny factor. In this ODI between India and South Africa, it was Proteas batting and the bowler was Kapil Dev. While Kapil was about to bowl, he noticed that Peter Kirsten was leaving the crease before he bowled. So, Kapil took a cunning trick, he stopped bowling and directly hit the stumps with ball in his hand. Kirsten was unaware of Kapil's trick and seemed frustrating. Find more in the video.

6) Mohinder Amarnath dismissal
This dismissal happened long ago in a match between India and the Aussies. It was GRJ Matthews bowling and Amarnath was on the crease. Amarnath attempted a normal shot but the ball slipped towards the wicket and was about to hit the stumps. Amarnath deliberately deflected the ball away from hitting the wicket. He was given out for "handling the ball". The most funny part is Amarnath himself laughed for his deeds after he was given out.

7) Adam Parore dismissal
This dismissal is very much analogous to the dismissal of Kevin Pietersen mentioned above. It was Aussie fast bowler Brett Lee who forced Adam Parore of New Zealand to return to the pavilion. Find out the fun more in the video embedded below.

8) Grant Lambert dismissal
It was funniest and most dumbest dismissal that counts. It was the match between the New South Wales and South Australia in the Ford Rangers Cup. Sahun Tait was the bowler and Lambert was on strike. After Tait bowled, Lambert made a comfortable room to play the shot but he did not bothered playing the shot and  was bowled at the end. Even Tait enjoyed the this show.

and the funniest of all
This dismissal is from the village cricket in England, so I didn't watched it on TV. But I bet you will watch this video at least twice. One of the most funniest and rib ticking dismissal. Now get ready for an awesome roller coaster of laughter. (please start from 1:55 for awesome laughter)

This marks the end of this funny dismissal series. Hope you enjoyed  this article. Please feel free to comment .

Different Orthodox Batting Shots

Orthodox simply holds the meaning "traditional". The orthodox batting shots are classified according to the region of the cricket ground where the batsman hits the ball. We must have been a great fan of Straight Drive of Sachin Tendulkar, Pull shot of Ricky Ponting, Square drive of Sourav Ganguly and so on. Many batsman around the globe show the orthodox shots at many times. In traditional batting, the entire cricket ground is sectioned into various small and large slices (think it analogous to the pizza slices ). And the shots are named accordingly into which slice of the cricket ground the batsman hits the ball. To get the clear picture, I have edited the cricket ground according to the playing zones. Lets get started.

[Note : all the batting shots are mentioned with reference to a Right Handed Batsman]

Drives :
A drive is a shot that is played by swinging the bat in the vertical arc along the line of the ball. While implementing the drive, the batsman uses the momentum of the ball and drives the ball into different slices. Just by looking at the batsman immediately after he plays the drive, the different kinds of drives can be differentiated. According to the region the ball traverses,  there are following different kinds of drives.

1) Straight Drive : A shot that is played by driving the ball into the straight region or point of the field. Straight Drive is best believed to be played by the batting legend Sachin Tendulkar.
Sachin playing straight drive
2) Off and On Drive : An off region is the region that is left to the straight region or often mid-off for a right handed batsman. The region right to the straight region is the on region or often called mid-on (see figure above). A batsman can drive the ball into the off and on slices of the field by playing the off and on drive respectively.
Off Drive - Kevin Pietersen (England)

On Drive - Zeshan Siddiqui
3) Cover Drive : A drive shot played along the cover region is a cover drive. A well timed cover drive is always mesmerizing and classy to watch.
Cover Drive - Yasir Hameed (Pakistan)
4) Square Drive : The drive played along the square region is a square drive. There is contradiction somewhere saying that a square drive is actually a square cut because it is taken as the horizontal bat shot.
Square Drive - Sachin Tendulkar (India)
Cuts
The cuts are the kinds of the horizontal bat sots played at the off-region. To be more specific, the cuts are the cross batted shots usually played at the short-pitched ball. In cuts, the bats man diverts the ball by utilizing the bowler's pace. Unlike drives, there is least effort of the batsman involved. It is because the batsman just diverts the bowler's pace and the required effort is normally low. The different forms of the cuts are:

1) Square cut : This shot is played on the off region at nearly 90 degrees in reference to the wicket or the point region.
Square Cut - Mohammed Hafeez (Pakistan)
2) Late cut : It is a shot that is played after the ball traverses the batsman body and is usually played towards the third man. Late cuts are more often played against the spinners.
Late Cut - Dough Watson
Leg glance : This is another clever orthodox shot. In this shot, the batsman uses the bat to flick the ball towards the leg region. This is straight batted shot and is often played when the ball is pitching towards the leg side.
Leg Glance - Mahela Jayawardene (Sri Lanka)
Hook and Pull shot : The pull shot is the cross batted shot that is played along the leg side when the ball is usually waist high. The shot got its name as it seems the batsman is pulling the ball towards the square leg. Aussie Player Ricky Ponting is best believed to master the pull shot.
Pull Shot - Ricky Ponting (Australia)
Hook shot, on the other hand is played against the bouncy ball or the ball up to chest high and the ball is played behind the square leg. The shot got its name as the it seems batsman hooks the ball.
Both hook and pull shot can be played at the front as well as back foot while the later being more effective.
Hook Shot - T Suman (Pune Warriors India)
This sums up the orthodox batting techniques. Please feel free to comment.
